Intensive English Course
OVERVIEW
English is used for academic discourse at all levels of Foundation and Degree programmes. The English For Life short courses are designed to provide solid guidance to foreign and local students in the usage of English Language. Primarily catered for students who have minimal or working understanding and ability in the usage of the English Language, the English For Life short courses allow students to first overcome their fears of speaking as well as improve upon the other areas of listening, conversation, reading and writing.
Basically, the syllabi follows a skills-based approach, reinforced by grammar consolidation, vocabulary development as well as practice in the English sound system. Using task-based activities in a language-enriched environment, the students will be equipped with increasing proficiency levels of linguistic and communicative competence much needed for daily usage and higher education.
OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to cater to the needs of foreign and local students who need support in English proficiency. Essentially, it provides a basis to help them acquire proficiency in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in English. In addition, the course enables them to gain academic insight and knowledge which will strengthen their participation in an academic environment, as well as enhance personal growth and development. Students are provided with a near-immersion environment with activities supervised by language facilitators , apart from formal contact hours with language lecturers.
- Ability to comprehend a variety of texts heard, like dialogues, interviews, announcements, advertisements/commercials, songs, poems, stories, news broadcasts, talks, speeches, lectures
- Ability to interact with degrees of proficiency in formal and informal situations
- Ability to comprehend a variety of texts read, like announcements, messages, advertisements, extracts, articles, letters, reports, poems, short stories, reference materials
- Ability to write correct sentences to construct paragraphs, cohesive passages and texts on specific topics
- Use of thinking and study skills to carry out language-based tasks and activities with confidence

ENTRY REQUIREMENT AND PRE-REQUISITES
- Basic knowledge of English Grammar
- Awareness of the four Language Skills
- Results of College Placement Test- applicants are required to sit for a Placement Test at the point of entry after which they are placed within one of the four levels of proficiency

7 - 14 weeks each level
