Emphasis on Moral Literacy
- The community is concerned over rising occurrences of indiscipline, cheating, gangsterism and crime in schools. These are but a mirror to the general malaise that has infected the value system of our youth. There is a public desperation for education interventions that would provide healthy guidance to our youth.
- This is really the bedrock of the vision upon which Life College is founded. The College tag line is appropriately labeled: Defining Standards, Refining Values.
- The College defines standards of proper living and proper relationships.
- The following strategies are employed to foster the development of moral literacy among the College students.
- Value-embedded courses
All courses offered at Life College has value enriched contents. Lecturers have been counselled to provoke discussions and create awareness of current value systems and issues on moral standards within their respective subjects. An Accounting lesson, for example, may explore case studies in the Enron and other accounting malpractices and seek to elicit students’ appreciation of the accounting ethics and moral principles involved. A simple English comprehension exercise can be based on a judicious selection of articles that debate current value issues. Articles on abortion, same sex marriage, pre marital sex, dating, media influence, drug menace can all be effective means to instill awareness and importance of principled judgements in our students while they overtly study English comprehension. Examples can be similarly found for subjects in management, business, information technology, mass communication fields etc. - Parallel Value-based workshops at Life College
The College conducts separate and weekly workshops to instill value awareness among our students – e.g. workshops on winning attitudes, becoming popular, Boy-Girl Relationships, making right decisions, effective teamwork, conflict resolution etc. Extended day-long workshops like the “No Apologies Program” provoke students decisions on withstanding peer pressure and abstinence from pre-marital sex and drug abuse. Guest speakers from the corporate sector and NGOs are invited to conduct such workshops. - Camps
The College organises annual camps and location visits to foster team spirit and bonding among staff and students. Such camps are a good time to provoke reflection and to lay down principles of life long values and skills.
